Teams & Experience

Iceman Polar teams should consist of a team leader and either 2 or 3 additional team members. Individuals and pairs will be teamed up with other competitors to form teams of 3 or 4 people. Each group’s team leader should have the following minimum experience at the time of arrival in Greenland for the race start*:

  • Significant previous winter camping experience
  • Significant winter mountaineering and ‘white out’ navigation experience
  • Previous winter (snow based) camping expedition leadership skills
  • Experienced in establishing a winter camp and erecting expedition tents in full winter snow conditions in harsh and extreme weather
  • Proficient in the ski skills required for the race (including multi day ski tour experience)
  • Proficient in use of map, compass and GPS and inputting and navigating to GPS positions
  • Responsibility for keeping a team together at all times in winter conditions
  • Experienced in roped glacier travel and crevasse rescue skills (team leaders will also be responsible for ensuring that the team are trained in safety techniques for glacier travel, roping up and crevasse rescue)
  • Proficient and trained in the use of a white gas fueled camping stoves and aware of the dangers and associated risks of using such a stove in a confined space, such as a tent
  • Holder of a current and valid first aid certificate

Each additional team member should have the following experience as a minimum at the time of arrival in Greenland for the race start:

  • 10 days winter (snow-based) camping experience
  • Significant additional camping experience
  • Training in roped glacier travel and crevasse rescue skills
  • Proficient in the ski skills required for the race (including ski touring experience)
  • Proficient and trained in the use of a white gas fueled camping stove and aware of the dangers and associated risks of using such a stove in a confined space such as a tent

*At the time of booking each team leader and team member will be required to provide a summary of current experience. If this experience is not sufficient to enter the race, a declaration must be signed to demonstrate your commitment to receive additional training and experience prior to your arrival in Greenland for the race start. Teams are permitted to use or employ the services of a professional guide as their team leader. The responsibility for choosing a suitably experienced team leader is the sole responsibility of team members, and the race organisers do not play any part in assessing the suitability of any guide.
